Burke's Lack Of Form Is Problem For Bluebirds

Cardiff City winger Chris Burke has failed to live up to the high standards he set last season and is a prime candidate to be dropped if Dave Jones opts to shake up his jaded squad for the all-important play-off clash with Reading.

Burke at his best is a terror for defenders, his pace, trickery and attacking instincts made him a prized asset and a constant menace for opposition defenders. He weighed in with goals, assists and stretched teams to allow his team-mates more space and time to create.

However, this season he has been disappointing, showing only glimpses of his best form and over the past 8 weeks, Burke has been in poor form, wasting possession and being easily marked by opponents. His game is not based around strength, but it`s noticeable how easily he can be brushed off. His confidence has been destroyed, and he`s not able to beat his man or show the drive and skill that underpins his best form.

He certainly provides natural width, and an outlet on the right wing. However, his shooting is really poor with a wild 40 yard lash against Middlesbrough, and a wasteful 20 yard drive going well wild when well placed on Saturday. It has been frustrating and disappointing to watch, especially since we all know the impact Burkey can have when at his best.

Currently, the inclusion of Burke is somewhat of a luxury for Cardiff City. Jason Koumas could feature on the right, but favourite to start should be the lively Jay Emmanuel-Thomas. The talented Arsenal youngster has failed to force his way into the Bluebirds first team, but provides pace, power and creativity on either flank and made a difference when he came on against Burnley. JET`s ball control is superb and he could yet have a huge say in the remaining 2 (hopefully 3 games).

Burke could still be very dangerous from the bench, but given recent form - it`s time he was dropped from the starting XI. The midfield has not been functioning properly of late, and a change is needed to ensure we have the best possible chance of getting the result we need against Reading.
