Craig Bellamy On Fire For Cardiff City

Cardiff City striker Craig Bellamy netted on his debut for the Bluebirds, a thunderous free-kick during a 4-1 win over Doncaster Rovers. Since then, the former Liverpool and Newcastle United player has endured lengthy spells without scoring until a recent spell of form has seen him fire his way into second place in the City goalscoring charts - surpassing natural finisher Michael Chopra in the process.

Bellamy has been utilised mostly in a wide left position, though there have been clear signs he would prefer a more advanced role. However, our shape and tactics dictate that Bellamy, who often likes to come deep is better suited out wide, where he can isolate his pace against a full-back and provide the quality and creativity that has served Bothroyd etc so well this season.

After Sunday`s stunning striker against Swansea, Bellamy has now scored in three consecutive games - no mean feat for a 'midfielder`. His finish against Watford was calmly taken as he reacted to slammed a blocked cross home, while the late free-kick and winner at Swansea were exemplary efforts from distance. He also grabbed a goal from an excellent Whittingham pass a few games previously as the Bluebirds ended Leeds United`s outstanding run of form.

Bellamy`s run of 4 goals in 5 games has co-incided nicely with our own return to form. Five games unbeaten is not yet promotion form, but after a very poor spell - we`ve beaten in-from Leeds, Watford and Swansea while draws against Norwich and Reading are also creditable results. All those teams are fighting for promotion and are very difficult opponents.

With 4 minutes to go in the previous two games, Bellamy rescued a point and won all three on Sunday. His contribution is much more than goals, and his inclusion has created space for others throughout the season. He appears fitter than at any other time this season and more relaxed about his game. Hopefully, his current hot streak can continue, and fire us further up the table and into the automatic promotion places.
