Matthews Mulling Options Amidst Celtic Interest

Cardiff City's promising young full-back Adam Matthews has a huge decision to make in a crucial period for the Welsh U21s star.

Matthews is out of contract at the end of the season, but would still command a significant fee if he moved to a club within the same league structure. However, Glasgow Celtic are keen to exploit the same system used to take Joe Ledley to Parkhead and have previously shown interest in Matthews.

However, Neil Lennon is now looking to swoop for Matthews during the current transfer window, rather than wait until the summer. Cardiff City are keen to avoid another 'Ledley' saga, especially with other players like Chris Burke and Jay Bothroyd already waiting until the summer to re-assess their options. The Bluebirds fear a mass player exodus could occur if we miss out on promotion.

Earlier this month, Matthews was offered a new deal with the Bluebirds, and is considering his options. However, he has barely played so far this season, and was criticised after making mistakes during defeats away at Ipswich Town, and home to Nottingham Forest. He has lacked confidence since, and apopears behind McNaughton, Quinn and Darcy Blake for the right-back shirt.

Losing Matthews would be bitterly disappointing for Cardiff City fans, given his potential and the excitement and performances which came with his arrival in the first team. Hopwever, he has failed to push on from that position and with a lack of gametime, could see his potential wasted and his career stagnate.

A loan move is an option, but Matthews may instead opt for a fresh start with celtic willing to pay the fee (up to £1m) that Cardiff City would ask for with just months remaining on his current deal.
