Reports in the media linking Cardiff City with a loan move for highly rated defender Danny Wilson have been circulating for several weeks now, but are continuing to crop up and appear to have a degree of weight behind them.
Wilson is a product of the Rangers youth system, but moved to Liverpool last summer for a fee around £2m. He rarely featured for The Reds, but was a popular figure at Ibrox and was voted young player of the year by the Rangers fans.
The Bluebirds are definitely in the market for one, or two centre-halves and a move for Wilson could tempt Dave Jones. However, any move would only involve a loan spell which creates more problems in terms of our matchday squads.
Wilson is under 23, which allows Cardiff to pursue him on a loan basis, however, FA rules allow a maximum of five loan players to be named in any matchday squad. We currently have Olofinjana, Bellamy, Keogh, Koumas and Danny Drinkwater on-loan meaning that we could not include all those names for any one game.
However, Bellamy is expected to miss the odd game as he rests his longstanding knee complaint, while Danny Drinkwater has also missed numerous games through a thigh problem. Jason Koumas has rarely featured and is in poor form, while Andy Keogh could also be sacrificed with Bellamy, Chopra, Bothroyd and Parkin forming a formidable attacking unit.
Our previous target was an experienced, gritty centre-half in Andy O'Brien. A move for Wilson would mark a distinct change from that model, in a young and inexperienced player albeit with great potential. That could suggest Jones would move for another player, with Millwall centre-half Danny Shittu a likely candidate - his short term deal expires on 20th January when he will become a free agent.
