Cardiff City: Koumas or Not Koumas?!?

Cardiff City fans were, on the whole, glad to see former midfield maestro Jason Koumas return on a season-long loan deal from Wigan Athletic, with the latics picking up a substantial portion of the Welshman's wages.

The majority were of the opinion that, while Koumas had been severely lacking in form and fitness since we tried and failed to sign him permanently, his undoubted skill and quality would see him have a significant impact and provide creativity and guile to our attacks.

There have been signs of 'Koumas of old' but certainly not enough to suggest he will be the key man once again. It is fair to say, he has not enjoyed much action - but remains off the pace and was disappointing in his recent start in the 0-0 home draw with Crystal Palace.

He has contributed more in substitute cameos and has shown glimpses of his calibre. That has drawn calls from Bluebirds fans keen to see him given a chance and see him return to form with a bang. After all, he is bound to need game time if he's to have any chance of making a significant impact. We know what he's capable of, and with the likes of Bellamy, Whittingham and co providing huge versatility, it seems Koumas could fight for a starting berth on the left (his favoured position), the right, or as a creative playmaker as part of a central midfield three - this would afford him creative freedom and license to roam and probe at will.

Conversely, there are others who question whether he is yet mentally strong enough, or confident enough for a recall. Indeed, many have cited his lack of work-rate and determination when making his brief cameos. Clearly, this is not (and never will be) Jason's natural game, but I admit it would have been encouraging to see him chase more effectively and try to gain possession against Swansea City.

As such, Cardiff City are faced with somewhat of a dilemma. Has Koumas justified himself to warrant a starting place in a promotion chasing team, bearing in mind Chopra, Whittingham, Burke or Drinkwater would have to make way? The answer is probably no, but, if Koumas is to get back to form - he will need time on the pitch, to allow him to compete for places....it may take only one moment of magic, or classy finish and suddenly of midfield would have another, top quality option.

Sounds like he has taken his really poor attitude that he had with us to you, undoubtedly talented but he just cant be arsed

I dont know, he naturally looks lazy but was superb with us before. At the moment, I dont think its indifference or laziness, just lack of confidence. Either way, its frustrating !
