Cardiff City romped to a 4-0 victory over rivals Leeds United on Monday, consequently joining QPR on level points at the top of the Championship. Whilst understandably disappointed with the scoreline, Leeds United defender Alex Bruce paid tribute to the Bluebirds and stated our performance would have seen many teams capitulate in the way the Whites did.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Bruce said of Cardiff City:
"Sometimes when you're playing against Bellamy, Bothroyd and Chopra, you can be punished. Everyone could see what a good team Cardiff are. They've got some very good players and when it gets to 1-0 or 2-0 they've got the ability to pick you off."
"Sometimes you get carved open by top players and the key is to learn from it. But I think that Cardiff team would have given quite a lot of teams a good drubbing."
Bruce was at fault for the Bluebirds` opener when he allowed a long Heaton punt to bounce in the middle of the park. There was a lack of communication as he tried to shield the ball towards his goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and succeeded only on poking the ball through his legs allowing Bothroyd an open goal.
The Bluebirds did extremely well to kill the game off, but until the fortunate opener - the game was actually very even. No-one should be getting carried away with the recent run of form, since as most supporters will appreciate, we have not been at our best for large periods. What City do now possess is the mental toughness to ride out those periods, and a ruthless edge to punish opposition teams.
Bruce must be sick of playing the Bluebirds, after appearing in all three play-off semi-final games for Leicester City last season and ultimately suffering the pain of losing in a penalty shoot out. He is unlikely to be relishing the return fixture when Leeds travel to CCS on 4th January for a midweek game.
