Former Swansea City midfielder Leon Britton is hoping to make his debut for new club Sheffield United when the Blades travel to South Wales on Sunday for our Championship curtain raiser.
Britton was an influential player for the Swans, and always looked tidy in possession and capable of picking some good passes in the familiar 3 man Swansea midfield. There are doubts as to how he will fit into a different formation given his diminutive stature, compact style and the more 'direct' nature of Sheff Utd's usual play. However, there is no doubt he is a good player, and the Blades will have been delighted to pick him up on a free transfer.
Britton has been speaking of his excitement about his new club, new season and is looking forward to the Cardiff City Stadium clash. Britton told the South Yorkshire Star:
'I'm sure the Cardiff fans are going to be rolling out the red carpet for me. I'm sure they're going to give me an absolutely wonderful reception.'
'The Cardiff fans are certain to give me a load of stick but it won't put me off. It won't bother me one little bit. In fact, if I'm selected, then I'm going to make sure I really enjoy the occasion.'
'Hopefully I'll be playing my first game for my new club and I'm really looking forward to it, not least because I'm excited about what the future holds here.'
It seems highly likely that Britton will get a typical ex-Swansea City player reaction. It's a new season, there will be a big crowd and Britton was somewhat of a Swansea stalwart have made almost 300 appearances for our local rivals.
