Cardiff City have been in disastrous form of late, with a torrid run of results on the back of losing key personnel and off-the-pitch battles with the taxman and other creditors. That we have slipped just 2 places in the table points to our previously strong position and the lack of consistency in the chasing pack. However, we remain clinging on by our fingernails but must get out of this slump immediately if the play-off dream is to survive.
In fact, Cardiff City`s form has been so bad of late, that we would comfortably be in the relegation zone if recent results were extrapolated over the season. That despite a morale-boosting win over Middlesbrough which failed to kickstart our season.
On current form, the Bluebirds are the second worst team in the Championship with only lowly Scunthorpe United faring worse over the most recent 8 matches. Bottom club Peterborough United (12) have almost doubled our points tally (7) over that period and embarrassingly we have the worse goal difference in the entire division on current form. We have conceded an alarming 14 goals, and scored a meagre 5 putting us on a par with Sheffield Wednesday and Crystal Palace. This is in contrast to our early and mid season form when Chopra and Whittingham were scoring goals for fun with Burke, Bothroyd and co chipping in on a regular basis.
Cardiff City teams in recent seasons have, without fail, endured a torrid season run in which ended any hopes of extending the season to the play-offs. Last season`s dismal capitulation allowed Preston North End to sneak in, despite being 8 points adrift with a handful of games remaining. Hopefully, the current run is our equivalent poor run and we will this year be treated to some good results in April. Whether we are in a position to take advantage depends on ending this poor run - starting tonight with play-off hopefuls Coventry City - a side on a good run, but having spend much of the season in the wrong end of the table. Perhaps both teams can 'return from whence they came' with a resounding victory for the Bluebirds tonight…
