Matthews Happy With Man Utd & Arsenal Interest

Cardiff City full-back is one of the most talked about players so far in the January transfer window with the youngster touted as one of the brightest prospects around and with the Bluebirds known to be susceptible to big money bids.

Matthews has only broken into the first team this season, but looks another fantasitc product of the academy. His gutsy and energetic performances have seen him stand out as an excellent full-back and a prospect that will only get better.

Arsenal and Manchester United are both known to be tracking the player, and press rumours were that a £4m deal has already been struck with Man Utd for a move - but that is denied by CCFC. The situation closely mirrors that of Aaron Ramsey, who eventually moved to the Gunners for £5m after a bidding war - his stock has risen dramatically and he lookscertain to realise his potential at Arsenal.

Under intense scrutiny, Matthews has confirmed he would have to talk to such a club, if they came knockin. He told BBC Sport:

'If that ever came about I'd have to think about it. But I'm just happy to be playing for Cardiff at the moment.'

'I don't think the speculation is distracting, I'm quite a level-headed boy and obviously I'm very happy to get noticed.'

'But I'm happy to be with Cardiff and play the rest of the season and I've heard nothing. It's just rumours.'

While Matthews is a great prospect, he must be careful. As a raw 17 year old, he wont get much gametime with any of the Premiership giants, and that is more valuable to his development than anything else. Gareth Bale and our own Chris Gunter made the move to the Premiership too early, and their careers suffered greatly because of it.

Nowadays, when those sort of clubs are mentioned it becomes more about getting as big a fee as possible as opposed to keeping the player.
