Cardiff City 1-0 Preston NE (Player Ratings)

Cardiff City beat Preston North End in a dull but hugely significant battle at the CCS:

David Marshall 7
Alert and agile and another assist for Burke`s goal. Did his job effectively.

Paul Quinn 6
Recalled in place of Matthews (strangely) and mixed some very good moments with some shaky ones. One early tackle was probabl;y the best of the game, but considering his lack of gametime - Quinn was solid.

Kevin McNaughton 8
How we missed Super Kev - his tireless workrate and calming presence was just what we needed and he looked as cool and classy as ever. Forced to switch to centre-back against two giants and was faultless. Welcome back dangermouse.

Anthony Gerrard 6
Solid enough and refused to be bullied until taken off 2nd half - deserved his recall.

Mark Hudson 8 M.O.M.
This was Hudson`s best so far, he was strong, committed and assured. This was the game for him to shine, with Preston`s bulky frontline and he handled them very well indeed - hopefully he can keep up that form.

Joe Ledley 6.5
Ledley worked tirelessly and never stopped running. Unfortunately his effect on the game was limited and he looked in pain with his hip injury. He`s not enjoying his football right now.

Riccy Scimeca 7
A welcome return, and an assured performance. It was great to have the added control in midfield while we actually competed in the air for once. Maybe it was a gamble, but he has to start on Tuesday.

Peter Whittingham 6
Some nice touches, but rarely in dangerous areas. Whittingham`s impact was limited but he did his job and went close with two efforts. He can`t score every week!

Chris Burke 7
Memorable goal, and tried to carry the ball when possible. Burke is very important to the midfield balance and although nnot in top form, he`s still a threat and linked up well.

Jay Bothroyd 7
Hard work, another assist and some decent efforts on goal. We absolutely need him in the side, and he`s doing a hugely important job.

Michael Chopra 5.5
Low on confidence, and hampered by an upset stomach - this was a day to forget for Chops. He worked hard but never got a break and his place must be in doubt.
