Cardiff City's Mac (Under) The Knife

Cardiff City's in-form midfielder Stephen McPhail is recovering after surgery to remove a growth in his neck and will miss today's clash with Crystal Palace.

The simple procudure was complicated after the lump was larger than anticipated and had become tangled with the muscle fibres in McPhail's neck. However, after a 90 minute operation - the lump was removed and is being analysed.

While McPhail is physically fit, he is left with a visible scar down his neck and will not play until that has fully healed. Sudden movements or headers could cause the stitches to break and he will sit out the next week.

Joe Ledley, Riccy Scimeca and Gavin Rae are among those hoping to replace McPhail while McCormack could get the nod if Whittingham was switched inside.
