Cardiff City defender Anthony Gerrard wants nothing less than a win today against Doncaster Rovers to set up a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash against fallen giants Newcastle United.
The Liverpudlian has slotted in well at the back for the Bluebirds, displacing Gabor Gyepes courtesy of an impressive pre-season and togetehr the two look a solid defensive partnership. Gerrard is more of a footballer however, and has proved to have good awareness and distribution from the back.
Gerrard is under no illusion as to the difficulty of the task, but is desperate to maintain our good start by taking all three points from the Keepmoat stadium. Gerrard told the SW Echo:
'They will want to put one over on us, especially seeing us back on top of the table. We have no doubt that Doncaster will be a difficult game.'
'But if we could come away with maximum points then we would remain top of the Championship for a fortnight due to the international break, and then face Newcastle United at home.'
'Being top for a two weeks would be great and the Newcastle game could be the marker for the rest of the season.'
Whilst footballers usually concentrate on the next game only, many in and around Cardiff will have one eye on the upcoming Newcastle United game on 13th September. Gerrard's comments are pertinent since beaten teams always prefer another game immediately after a defeat to put things right.
Gerrard is aware of the upcoming International break and will be determined to get a good result so as to keep the momentum over the two week gap. Many teams have under-estimated Doncaster Rovers and they acheived a solid 14th position last year. We were rescued by a late McCormack strike to earn a point - but must be looking to go one better this time.
