Cardiff City look set to give a senior starting debut to youngster Adam Matthews when the Bluebirds travel to play Plymouth Argyle tonight. It is likely to be a tough game, and somewhat of a battle but Dave Jones will turn to a highly rated teenage prospect after a number of untimely injuries to the Bluebirds squad.
First choice full-back pair of Kevin McNaughton and Paul Quinn are both ruled out. Additionally, left-back deputy Mark Kennedy is also unavailable meaning a rare chance for Tony Capaldi to stake a claim for a regular starting spot. Matthews was a late substitute for the injured Quinn against Blackpool over the weekend and looked comfortable. If, as expected, he gets the nod tonight - he will have been selected over two other players who have regularly filled the right back position for the Bluebirds over recent seasons.
Miguel Comminges was a free transfer signing from Swindon Town who failed to convince last season. Nevertheless, he is relatively experienced and a natural right-sided full-back. He has a tendency to be unpredictable and is sometimes caught out of position but filled in regularly as a full-back last year. Alternatively, Dave Jones could have turned to versatile youngster Darcy Blake. The Welsh U21 International is still relatively inexperienced but has racked up a number of appearances for the Bluebirds, most regularly as an emergency right-back. He has always done reasonably well and looked a decent prospect.
For a 17 year old to get the call above these two more established players shows the quality and potential he has. Previous players like Ledley, Gunter and Ramsey have all broken through and been shown faith in from an early age. Matthews was signed from under the noses of local rivals Swansea City and been highly rated ever since.
