'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Cardiff City's Mercurial Wideman Back On Song

Cardiff City fans were desperately frustrated and disappointed by the awful team form at the rear end of last season. Three players however, were singled out for poor performances throughout the season amid severe concerns about commitment, balance and quality of our midfield.

One such player was skilful wideman Peter Whittingham. The former Aston Villa man is a prodigious talent but has often flattered to deceive and has rarely shown the performances his talent promises. Too often he was marginalised and failed to contribute as play passed him by. He became all to preditable cutting in from the right and got few chances in his favoured left-wing spot.

However, after a solid pre-season, Peter Whittingham has impressed greatly in the two competitive games this season. An opening day rout of Scunthorpe saw Whitts in a creative and influential move. His shot saw Chopra net the first, while he coolly dispatched a late penalty. Additionally, we saw moments of class typified by immaculate ball control and incisive passing.

Even more impressive was Whittingham's man of the match performance against lowly Dagenham & Redbridge. Hardly a glamour tie but for a midweek cup clash against League Two opposition - it was particularly encouraging to see the interest and effort that appeared lacking last term. The last game I rememeber Whitts in such influential mood was against Middlesborough when he scored one and created one.

The stand out moment was a flowing move between he and Steve McPhail culminating in a ferocious and superbly executed drive that flew into the top corner - an early contender for goal of the season.

Cardiff City have yet to add to the midfield ranks since last season, and have been further weakened by the departure of Paul Parry to Preston North End. What seems promising however, is the return of Whittingham and hopefully the long awaited fulfilment of his potential. For now at least, Peter Whittingham seems like a new signing - and a very promising one at that.
