Cardiff City New Boy Hopeful Over Chances

Cardiff City New Boy Hopeful Over Chances

Cardiff City's new recruit Anthony Gerrard has made a fine start to his Bluebirds career after impressing during pre-season following his £200k move from Walsall.

Gerrard is an experienced but youg defender and was captain with the Saddlers. His leadership and passion has shone through on the pitch as well as some commanding and assured defending. Addtionally, Gerrard looks comfortable in possession and an assured footballer, certainly his distribution from the back looks promising.

Gerrard and Mark Hudson have been brought in to replace the departed Roger Johnson and Darren Purse with Gerrard knowing the last defender we plucked from the lower league obscurity (Gyepes was already a Hungarian International) turned out to be a huge success.

Gerrard spoke to BBC Sport about his plans to break-into the first team and to play in the Premiership:

'Cardiff have got everything, the infrastructure is amazing, the new stadium, the new training facilities. So they're looking to make the step and hopefully I can make that with them.'

'You don't expect anything with the manager, to be fair, you just go out and train as well as you can and hopefully that you then get selected.'

'The only thing I have to prove is I can play at this standard, hopefully I can muscle my way into the side and stay there.'

Mark Hudson and Gabor Gyepes look the odds on favourites to start against Scunthorpe United next week. However, Gerrard has proved he is a promising player and has the passion and determination to break into our starting XI. Dave Jones has a good track record in signing defenders and we will all be hoping he's un-earthed another gem in Anthony Gerrard.
