Cardiff City fans remember Steve Thompson as a hard-working, and aggressive striker who never got on with Dave Jones and failed to back up his gutsy performances with goals. Almost certainly, any reference to Thommo would include his pre-season mishap two years previously.
Thompson was all set for a move to Preston when on holiday with his family. The move was not yet finalised but his City future was unclear and PNE made him a good offer. However, the big Scotsman made the unusual mistake of falling of a banana boat whilst in the seas - and tore a muscle in his leg.
Last season Thommo moved to Burnley and did really well - he developed a goalscoring knack and seemed to fit into the Clarets squad well. However, he seems to have a bit of a thing for bizarre accidents in pre-season after falling - this time during a game!
Playing in a friendly against Portland Timbers, Thompson was sent flying through advertising hoardings on the side of the pitch where he collided with a beer garden table and punter. Always the joker, Thommo grabbed the bloke's drink and took a glug - as Cardiff City fans can probably imagine. Thommo was the guilty culprit for stashing a crate of wine on the bus for the ride home after our semi-final victory against Barnsley.
Thankfully, he was not hurt this time though Burnley manager Owen Coyle - a notorious tee-totaller has fined him a week's wages for unprofessional behavious. Footballers are allowed a cheeky beer every once in a while - probably not during a game however.
