Football off-season invariably signals the start of the transfer rumour silly season and fair enough. We all need something to keep us entertained and optimistic over the barren summer months. Links, whisperings and wranglings dominate the back pages with the Premiership ins and outs particularly prominent.
That means Championship clubs are relegated to sometimes ridiculous links with absolutely no substance. Some appear wishful thinking, others space-fillers and the rest complete fabrication.
Today sees the emergence of two such Cardiff City related stories though, as ever, stranger things have probably happened...
1) Cardiff City are considering a bid for Tal Ben Haim. Yep thats the big Israeli defender currently with Manchester City. He made his way there from Chelsea and as a dominant in-his-prime defender experienced in the Premiership - he would command wages upwards of £30k per week. Add to that his transfer fee of £5m just a year ago, and his likely reluctance to step down a division and the chances appear less than 0%. Nevertheless several sources have linked Cardiff City with the player - crazy!
2) Another such rumour surrounds the transfer of a player out of Cardiff City. This one in fact has a little substance insomuch as Arsenal are known to have watched Joe Ledley on several occasions. That's fair enough, Arsenal are a top club and will likely scout all manner of players as they seeks to build a successful team on a lower budget than their rivals. They will also have seen Ledley on the various occasions they watched Aaron Ramsey - and Ledley was very good last season.
However, online reports today are linking the Gunners with a £5m swoop for Ledley. This is problematic. For a start, Arsenal are the most glamourous club linked with the Welshman and would do well to register interest with a lower bid than £5m! Can you see Arsene blowing a large chunk of his kitty on an untried player from a lower league?
If Ledley moves to Arsenal for £5m....Well you'd suspect it was compensation for our 4-0 mauling last season!
Whilst these unfounded and impossible rumours circulate, we hope that Jones and Ridsdale are busy behind the scenes working on some actual transfers both in and out - as yet there is little sign and until then - we can expect to have to read more of this utter drivel !
