Cardiff City endured a torrid time whilst utilising a number of different goalkeepers throughout the last campaign. Heaton, Enckelman, Taylor and Konstantopoulos all had spells as the Bluebirds number 1 but the only man not to be dropped by Dave Jones was actually our best performer.
After a costly mistake in the FA Cup final, some fans were unsure that Encks was a good signing. He started the season as number two, making his first appearance in a 1-0 away defeat to Swansea City in the Mickey Mouse Cup.
However, after Heaton got injured, Enckelman stepped up and we went 13 games unbeaten until a knee operation forced an early end to the season for the Finn. During that time, we won 7 and drew 6 games including an excellent effort in nullifying Arsenal in a 0-0 draw. That was one of 7 clean sheets kept by Enckelman this season and with Johnson and Gyepes imperious in defence - things were looking good.
Enckelman didn't play very often for Cardiff City this season but was steady and in truth I felt most comfortable with him between the posts. His kicking was poor at times, but that was the case with all four of our goalkeepers. Peter Enckelman is not the only first team goalkeeper in the squad until David Marshall officially joins up with his new team-mated following a £400k switch from Norwich City.
It will at least be good to have two contracted periods and not loan signing following a turbulent history in that position since Neil Alexander left. None of Heaton, Taylor, Oakes or Forde were all that inspiring while the less said about Konstantopoulos and Turnbull the better !
