Cardiff City Release Captain Darren Purse

Cardiff City and former Captain Darren Purse have parted company after the former West Brom defender was informed he would not be offered a contract for next season. That means Darren will be officially released and is available of a free transfer.

The 33 year old was Dave Jones' first signing and DJ blew his entire £700k kitty on Purse who quickly established himself as a solid and committed defeander as well as a very good leader.

However, Dave Jones' happy knack of spotting good central defenders has led to the signings of Glenn Loovens, Roger Johnson and Gabor Gyepes. Each started their Cardiff City careers o0n the bench, but managed to fight their way past Purse meaning the former captain has now spent two full years mostly on the sidelines.

It comes as little suprise really taht Purse will be moving on. He has rarely re-found his best form in recent times save for a spell at the start of this season but he has not had a long run of games and at 32 needs to play regularly to maintain his fitness.

Many Cardiff City fans will be sad to see Darren go. He was a great servant for the club, professional and dedicated. To be fair, he put up with a lot here, and very rarely complained. He was often to be found sitting/standing with the away fans if not involved with the match and he will be rememebered fondly in South Wales.

Sheffield Wednesday seems to be the likely destination for Purse, Norwich City showed strong interest mid-season but he will prefer another season in the Championship if possible.

Darren Purse joins Graham Kavanagh as a truly great Club captain - we owe him a lot .. his encouragement of younger players was a great example - if only all supporters showed as much club spirit and loyalty ..

Agreed, pursey never hid away and deserves a great deal of respect. I hope Kav returns as coach one day...
