Cardiff City face a huge match today against fellow play-off hopefuls Burnley. We spoke to Phil of Vital Burnley to get his views on the match:
Burnley must be confident of a play-off place now?
7th placed local rivals Preston have dropped points and we are five-seven points clear of them with games running out.
Our destiny is in our own hands, quietly confident but I know how in the past we have cocked things up at this stage.
Who would you like most to play in the play-offs?
I would fancy our chances against the bigger ex-Premier League sides teams in view of our record in the Cups this year, A Birmingham (if they drop down) or a Reading would be a cracker in the semi and then either you or Blades at Wembley. I think that would be an easier route to Wembley for us.
Your thoughts on ex-Bluebird Steve Thompson?
He was slow to get going but his mastery in the air has been an asset both in terms of attacking assists and in defence during set pieces. He openly admits he is not a prolific goal-scorer but we suddenly seem to have got the best out of him with I think now 10 goals to his credit. He has been out recently with a ankle ligament injury and is fighting to be be fit for Easter Monday against his old club
What are your team strengths/weaknesses?
Our biggest strength this season has been our determination not to be defeated even when we are one, sometimes 2 nil down. Our attack is now far more attractive on the eye and we play the passing game rather than the 'hoof and hope' to a target man.
The weakness can be our defence, it can be either rock solid or suspect and we have conceded a number of weak goals due to defensive error this season. Sometimes it seems like we cant clear our lines and often the midfield seem to have gone AWOL when we need them to drop back and help
Player to watch Monday?
Martin Paterson is our top scorer with 17 goals this season and yet he hasn't scored now in 10 games. I get the feeling he is going to hit form again anytime now and start bagging a few.
If you could have one Cardiff City player on a free - who and why?
Probably either McCormack or Bothroyd if we are talking goal scorers. We can be a bit light in that department when one or more of our strikers are injured although young Jay Rodriguez is coming along nicely
Prediction for the game?
I would be happy with a point but if you do beat us, I will be seeking revenge in the play-off matches!! At least the final is at Wembley these days and not your second home at the Millennium Stadium.
Many thanks to Phil for his views.
