Cardiff City Delight For 'Off-The-Mark' Rae

Cardiff City Delight For 'Off-The-Mark' Rae

Cardiff City players, fans and manager will have been delighted with the identity of the scorer ofour second goal last night with Scottish International midfielder Gavin Rae getting on the scoresheet for the first time thhis season. He celebrated in style, you could see what it meant to him and his team-mates rushed to congratulate Rae.

Gavin has had a fair few chances but is not a natural goal-scorer. However, he makes some excellent runs and covers a great deal of space to get beyond the front two regularly this season. He was yet to hit the net and after speaking of his frustration a month ago, he hit a thunderbolt of a drive that rattled the visiting teams crossbar and left is ahking. I think it was Barnsley or Doncaster at home. It seemed like Gavin was running out of time and luck to score this season.

However last night saw him put through twice, courtest of a brilliant Chopra flick - though he was forced wide and saw his effort blocked - and the chance from which he scored. It was without a doubt the best move of the night, and saw Chopra and McPhail play key roles. Rae had made one of his trademark lungbursting runs and got behind Alrechtsen, McPhail found him with a perfectly weighted pass and Rae, with all the skill and patience of a pro - drew the keeper, touched it round and side-footed home.

It did not look like the first goal of the season, and was executed very well indeed. It could have been Michael Owen or Thierry Henry rounding Bywater with ease.

Well done Gavin Rae, I hope he keeps his place in the side on Monday and that maybe another goal or two follows before the end of the season.
