Loss Of Cardiff City 'Rock' Is Big Blow

Cardiff City have (almost) a clean bill of health as we prepare for potentially the biggest game of the season on Sunday when local rivals Swansea City visit Ninian Park.

Of our well assembled squad, I would argue only 5 players are guaranteed a starting position. Bothroyd is integral to our system (though Eddie Johnson could cover), Ledley (although McPhail is a hugely experienced replacement and on his day can be highly influential), Kevin McNaughton (though the Scot is injury prone and Comminges/Blake provide cover) and the two highly rated centre-backs Roger Johnson and Gabor Gyepes (Darren Purse providing cover).

No disrespect to Darren Purse, but if we were to pick an area least well covered in case of injury/suspension - the loss of Johnson or Gyepes is the biggest blow of all.

That of course is exactly the sceenario right now, and the unfairness of it still rankles the Bluebirds fans and surely the player aswell who made a clean tackle to deny Darius Henderson (the Sheffield United striker agreeing no penalty should have been awarded) - but received a straight red and suspension.

Gyepes has been rock solid this season, strong in the tackle, dominant in the air and calm and assured throughout a promising season to date. His injury problems appeared behind him and whilst its difficult to say which of he and Roger Johnson is the better defender, their partnership has been the foundation of our success and in my opinion - they are the best centre-back pairing of the Championship.

Darren Purse will undoubtedly step in on Sunday, and will be determined as ever not to let us down. He never does to be fair and has been as professional as ever during another frustrating season. Earlier this year he was in great form, but a poor display against Plymouth Argyle saw him dropped and he has rarely featured since. Purse is 100% determination, hard-work and application - while his defending and pace can be suspect at times - he will be looking to restore some pride, and who would begrudge him that?
