The Cardiff City & Eddie Johnson Circus !

Cardiff City striker Eddie Johnson is currently away on International duty with USA but its fair to say his time in Ninian Park has not been all that successful. However, judging by the cheers that greet his name, the USA chants or 'Eddie, Eddie` - you`d have thought we`d uncovered a real talent, a goal-scoring machine instrumental in our successful season to date. That`s not strictly true and while Eddie has emerged as a fans favourite - it seems more tongue in cheek than anything.

Eddie has netted one goal in 5 starts and eighteen substitutes appearances - it was a long time coming and mattered little but his neat finish to seal a 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers sparked huge celebrations amongst fans and those who saw Eddie score his only ever goal on European soil now belong to a select club. Whilst some of his performances have been better than his stats suggest - there is no place in the Championship for a striker who doesn`t score whilst we have certainly seen no sign of his reported £3m price tag, nor the £15k wage packet he commands each week.

Cardiff City are winning games, are riding high in the Championship and have a decent shot at promotion. Rest assured, if we were languishing outside the play-offs as in recent seasons - Eddie would not receive the rapturous applause he gets now and would instead be the target of abuse and complaints from the Cardiff City fans who have little patience for strikers who certainly try hard but can`t seem to find the net regularly - just ask Alan Lee or Steve Thompson.

The Eddie Johnson circus appears a sideshow to a promising season, a laugh for the crown and chance to get involved. Whether we are promoted or not, Eddie Johnson has hinted at a longer stay while Fulham will surely want rid of his wage bill. Would you want to sign Eddie Johnson permanently?

A poll is now open on the right hand side of your screen for thoughts on signing Eddie permanently. Whilst there have been mere glimpses of quality and potential, few players would be lucky enough to receive the reception he does and tongue-in-cheek or not, it`s a much better treatment than Stephen McPhail gets - who`s the better player? Eddie is a likeable guy, I think his sheer haplessness made him a likeable character, rather like buffoon-type cartoon characters. He has been lucky - he may yet turn out to be a decent footballer at this level - would you want Cardiff City to take that chance?!?
