Cardiff City grabbed a late point courtesy of an uncharacteristic mistake from Bristol City goalkeeper Adrian Basso.
Cardiff City opted for a Ledley-McPhail partnership in midfield and it did not work. Along with the anonymous Whittingham, Cardiff struggled to keep possession but did go close with headers from Roger Johnson and Gabor Gyepes. Carey saw a long shot well saved by debutant Taylor in a relatively even first half.
However, after the break, Bristol City were in control and deservedly took the lead through Nicky Maynard. The former Crewe Alexandra striker had been caught offside numerous times but cut in from the left, skipping several half hearted challenges before firing part Stuart Taylor.
McIndoe and Adebola had chances to finish the game while Cardiff City rarely threatened. McCormack saw two free-kicks saved before the Scottish substitute latched onto a parried Eddie Johnson effort -= Basso though he had time but McCormack finished from close range as the Brazilian grasped for the ball.
Cardiff City were fortunate today - the midfield was extremely poor and gave the forwards little chance. We were solid in defence but the Bristol City possession and pressure was bound to tell eventually. A point is no mean feat at Ashton Gate, but we need to be much much better than this.
Bristol City 1-1 Cardiff City
