Preston NE 1-0 Crewe Alex.

Preston overcame relegation probables Crewe last night in a vital win for the Lilywhites. After faltering in recent weeks, Preston won their game in hand to move 5 points clear of Wolves and Cardiff.

Brett Ormerod scored the only goal after good play by Patrick Agyemang on the left. Crewe, who had been enjoying a decent run of form of late, rarely threatened the Preston goal whereas PNE created a number of chances and could reasonably have expected to win by more than the 1 goal.

With the 5 point lead and far superior goal difference to Cardiff and Wolves, Preston are now favourites for the 6th play-off berth but with 6 games remaining, there is still plenty to come.

All eyes now turn to this weekend where Cardiff travel to lowly Southampton, needing a win to keep up the pressure on PNE. Preston and Wolves are both away to Coventry and Plymouth respectively.
