Cardiff City fans were ecstatic to learn of the re-signing of striker Michael Chopra on loan from Sunderland with a view to a permanent move. Whilst down on a previous loan spell, Chopra netted 5 times in the spell just before our recent good form.
With 17 games of the season still to go, Chopra is determined to add to his tally significantly and has even commented he intends to overhaul Ross McCormack (currently some 8 goals ahead)! That appears a tough ask but in a team fighting for promotion, a player of Chopra`s calibre can be expected to contribute. A recent poll on this Vital Cardiff City website invited readers to share their views on how many Chops will score this season:
10-15 (60%)
5-10 (24%)
16-19 (10%)
Depends on gametime (5%)
20+ (1%)
The majority of Bluebirds felt Chopra would score 5-10 times between now and the end of the season, that`s a ratio of between 1 in 2, and 1 in 3 goals per game - roughly average for a striker. However a significant proportion felt he could go better and score another 10-15 goals - many strikers would be content with that over the season!
One major problem facing Chopra will be trying to force his way into the starting XI, that probably means replacing McCormack due to Bothroyd`s fine form and the fact he is integral to the way we play.
Chopra looks certain to start on the bench for the next league game, but will hope to make an impact - it`s fantastic to have a player like him to bring on and tiring defenders will not look forward to that…!
