Cardiff City have more squad depth at present than at any time since they were promoted to the Championship around 6 years ago. The transfer window acquisitions of Chopra, Quincy and Burke have added to an already impressing team and we are serious promotion contenders. Dave Jones is a keen believer in only bringing players in who are better than what he has and this is indicated by the number of players unable to break into the 1st team when they were previously regulars. McPhail, Scimeca, Purse & Capaldi are such examples.
We could now put out two entirely different starting XIs, each of which I believe would be competitive in the XChampionship.
Thje first team (as played against Nottingham Forest:
Eckelman, Kennedy, Johnson, Gyepes, McNaughton, Parry, Burke, Ledley, Rae, McCormack, Bothroyd.
Whereas our 2nd XI would probably be:
Heaton, Capaldi, Comminges, Purse, Dennehy, Whittingham, Blake, McPhail, Scimeca, Chopra, Quincy.
Not half bad! I think the weakness is in defence with Dennehy the only untried player in the side. All the other players have at some point been selected as first choice for the Bluebirds so all are proven Championship players. The exception is Quincy (who was regularly picked for Birmingham City) and Darcy Blake - a young but promising midfielder/defender who many feel should have had more chances.
What do you think of these teams, will Dave Jones be able to maintain morale in the bigger squad? Readers will note, there is no place in either side for the biggest earner at the club - Eddie Johnson….!
