Ex-Cardiff City Striker Propels Pilgrims Reserves

Former Cardiff City striker Steve MacLean lined up against Cardiff City reserves yesterday and scored the two goals which saw Plymouth Argyle reserves triumph.

MacLean was a free transfer signing from Sheffield Wednesday and surrered a number of injuries in a slow start with the Bluebirds. He never really recovered and made virtually no impact at all with Cardiff - missing a penalty on debut. His biggest contribution was probably in the FA Cup tie against Chasetown - setting up the crucial equaliser for Peter Whittingham.

Midway through the season, MacLean was allowed to leave for a staggering fee of £500k - unbelievable business for Cardiff City and the striker has now slipped down the pecking order with the Pilgrims - boss Paul Sturrock confirming he will be allowed to leave.

Nevertheless, MacLean scored twice yesterday as he and former Bluebirds loanee Simon Walton (another unpopular ex-player) saw off the challenge of a young Cardiff City side including two triallists.
