Cardiff City Captain Angling For New Contract

Following a disappointing season last year, Cardiff City captain Darren Purse underwent a rigourous pre-season training schedule in a bid to return stronger and more focussed than ever for the new season. Having spent much of his time warming the bench, Purse must have welcomed Glenn Loovens' decision to move on as another chance.

Since Loovens' departure, Purse regained his place alongside Roger Johnson in the heart of the Cardiff City defence. Although not the most convincing partnership, their understanding has improved and a clean sheet away at Sheffield United was very encouraging. At present, Purse is keeping new signing Gabor Gyepes, and youngster Darren Dennehy out of the side.

Purse is now looking to re-commit his long-term future to the club and is intent on keeping his place in the side, and the captain's armband. He told BBC SPORT:

'I'm looking to extend my Cardiff City career, I want to stay at the football club but that's not down to me, that's down to the board and the manager whether they want to give me another contract.'

'All I can do is just go out and play football, but if I carry on the way I've been playing in the last four games then hopefully I'll do alright for myself.'

Pursey has been an excellent servant for the club, and on his day is a superb defender too. His commitment cannot be questioned, while his experience and leadership skills are valuable qualities in our young side. However, a tendency to rush out and lack of pace still seem to be causing problems and this hopefully will become less costly as the partnership with Johnson develops.
