'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Cardiff City Beat Southampton: Boss Comments

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones was satisfied by the three points but demanded more from his side after a 2-1 opening day victory against Southampton. Jones told BBC Sport:

'We can do better as we weren't fluent today. We enjoyed one or two good link-ups but too many players didn't perform to their capabilities.'

'We kept a lot of pressure on Southampton and Roger is always dangerous at set-pieces as we work at it day in, day out.'

'Southampton disputed the goal, however they were not questioning whether it was over the line or not because it was a good foot over.'

Southampton boss Jan Poortvliet was disappointed to leave with nothing but took positives from his young side's performance:

'I was satisfied with the first half, particularly the opening 30 minutes, but then Cardiff came into it and they worked very hard.'

'I am disappointed because we came so close to getting a point. It's a shame that in the last minute you concede a goal because you need to mark for the full 90 minutes.'
