Cardiff's Loovens Linked With Rangers Switch

Just what Cardiff City fans didn't want to hear - interest in Dutch central defender Glenn Loovens. The ex-Feyenoord centre-back has stalled on signing a new deal at the club, instead holding out for a potential move to the Premiership.

No confirmed interest had yet been registed, but Glasgow Rangers boss Walter Smith has put Loovens on his wanted list after giant ex-QPR rock Danny Shittu's move fell through.

Although not the Premiership, Loovens could well be tempted to move to Ibrox with the prospect of European football an enticing one and from where he would be better placed to earn a place in the Dutch National side.

A Ranger's move for Loovens could mean a swap deal for Bluebirds target Kris Boyd. The club turned down our offers earlier in the close season but may not be willing to let Boyd leave - in order to persuade us to part with Loovens.

Loovens and Johnson, signed for a combined fee of £550k, have been outstanding signings for Cardiff City - perhaps two of the best in a decade and last season formed a commanding and stingy defensive partnership. Although desperate to keep that unit intact, a striker is the priority and Jones/Ridsdale may well look into the swap deal.

Is Loovens worth sacrificing for Boyd? Is it time to cash in on a player who does not see his future with CCFC ?

No, he is not worth sacrificing. As you said, his combination in centre defence with Johnson is arguabally the best we've had in a decade - and for that point alone, must stay at all costs. Nobody is denying that we need a striker or two, but to swap one of our best players, and distrupt our best combination, and our only advantage over other teams for the sake of a striker who clearly doesn' want to come here in the first place, would be suicide.

He'll sign a new contract with us before the season kicks off. Wishful thinking maybe..
