Cardiff City Tread Water Again

Cardiff City failed miserably to add to their threadbare squad yesterday ahead of the 5pm loan deadline.


Despite the encouraging noises made by the club, it seems there was never any possibility that re-enforcements would arrive and speculative interest in Michael Chopra and Robert Earnshaw was designed primarily to appease the restless fans.


With a distinct shortage of striking and defensive options, one or two loan signings would have been extremely welcome but the club could not afford the loan fee while we were continually told that most of the targets were gone.


That said, plenty of other Championship teams did manage to strengthen with some proven players on the move. Shola Ameobi adds impetus to Stoke's automatic promotion bit while Crystal Palace signed Chelsea hotshot Scott Sinclair. Saturday's opponents Southampton added experienced defender Chris Powell to their squad. Slusarski joined Wednesday's fight for survival and former Cardiff City defensive target was snapped up by rivals Swansea City.


Cardiff City are left to soldier on bravely in their FA Cup semi-final, and unlikely pursuit of a play-off place, with their current squad. A lack of defensive cover and no natural goalscorer are somewhat of a problem but we'll give it a shot.
