Cardiff City will tonight find out who they will face in the quarter final of the FA Cup as Sheffield United and Middlesborough replay their 5th round tie.
The FA Cup run has been a bright spot in a difficult season for the Bluebirds. League form has been scintillating at times, but far too inconsistent and the brief play-off charge appears to be faltering and we seem likely to fade into mid table. Add to that a disappointing exit to Newport County in the FAW Cup, and a potentially club-threatening court case hanging over us, Cardiff City fans have not enjoyed the best of times despite promises of the 'strongest squad in years'.
Sheffield United have appointed former Luton Town boss Kevin Blackwell as manager until the end of the season, he replaces Bryan Robson after a poor spell at Brammall Lane. The Blades were expected to challenge for promotion, but will now have to consolidate and hope to continue their good cup form.
Middlesborough have done well in the Premiership despite early predictions of a relegation battle. Gareth Southgate has some emerging young talent at his disposal and has strengthened other areas with pace and flair with the likes of Tuncay Sanli and Jeremie Alliadiere.
Middlesborough have home advantage for the second leg and are the favourites to progress. However, either team will provide a stern but achievable test for the Bluebirds when they travel to the North of England next weekend.
