'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The End of the FAW Premier Cup

It seems likely that last week's penalty shoot-out FAW Premier Cup knock-out was Cardiff City's last ever game in the competition. Newport County overcame a mixed Bluebirds side and progress to the final.

Crucially, BBC Wales have announced they will be ending their sponsorship of the annual competition after the current campain dealing a massive blow to the future of the cup.

A board meeting is due to take place this week to discuss the future of the tournament but without major sponsorship investment, the competition is doomed.

Cardiff City have played their part in the demise of the Cup, we amongst others have not taken the competition seriously - often fielding youth or second string sides. That has meant a lack of interest from fans and media alike. The prize monies have been important for a number of League of Wales clubs to improve finances and facilities but gate receipts and general interest have disappointed.

It would of course have been a different story if European football was on offer to the winner - but sadly that is not the case and as such the tournament became a distraction to the big league clubs, ultimately ending in the end for the FAW Premier Cup.
